Free Style Writing Challenge.

Writing Challenges banner 1

Hugh,  over at Hugh’s Views and News has very kindly challenged me to take part in the Freestyle Writing Challenge.

I decided on a five-minute time.

I will be honest with you. I found I had to edit and think my words through. Had I actually written without thinking, I might have produced more. But, I did it my way… as always!

I will be giving myself more of these to do, as I enjoyed it and if I actually learn to just write… mistakes and all, I’m sure my word count will go up.

Here’s what Hugh asked me to write about.

If you were asked to write a script for Doctor Who or any other Science Fiction series, and had to invent a new monster for the show, what would your story be about, and describe the monster you would be introducing to the world?

The green men.

 “Something’s not right” hissed George.

Arthur cocked his curly, ginger head, to listen.

“Over there, in the trees. There’s something moving towards us. ” Screamed George, already starting to run.

But, he was soon entangled. Arthur also felt the thing wrap itself around both bare legs.

A tree! It was the roots of a tree. They felt cold and clammy as they circled further and further up his shaking, scrawny body.

The two men screamed for their lives, until their screams were muffled by the roots, which filled their mouths. The taste and smell of fresh earth. Just like the earth  they had recently dug, trying to unearth the badger setts.

Slowly, their bodies were absorbed by the tree and two new mounds appeared on the bark. Two faces, with eyes that stared down in horror at the badger setts in the bank below.

In time, those faces would take on the appearance of regret, as they watched the generations of  badgers live out their lives, beneath them. Lives that they would have cruelly taken, in the name of  their sport, had the tree not intervened.

They would come to be known as the green men… the two faces in the tree.

So, there is my attempt. Trees that fight back, when nature is threatened. Would it be suitable for Dr Who? You decide!

I would like to challenge:

Now here are the rules… if you decide to take part in this challenge.

1. Open a blank Document
2. Set a stop watch or your mobile phone timer to 5 or 10 minutes, whichever challenge you prefer.
3. Your topic is at the foot of this post BUT DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO SEE IT UNTIL YOU ARE READY WITH YOUR TIMER!!!
4. Once you start writing do not stop until the alarm sounds!
5. Do not cheat by going back and correcting spelling and grammar using spell check (it is only meant for you to reflect on your own control of sensible thought flow and for you to reflect on your ability to write with correct spelling and grammar.)
6. You may or may not pay attention to punctuation or capitals.
7. At the end of your post write down ‘No. of words = ____” to give an idea of how much you can write within the time frame.
8. Do not forget to copy paste the entire passage on your blog post with a new topic for your nominees and copy paste these rules with your nomination (at least five (5) bloggers)

When you have the document and the timer ready to go, scroll down to see your subject…

Have you ever seen a ghost and what would you do if you did see one?

Thanks for dropping by and have a great day.

Dorne x

  1. Well I have to say that was a great piece of flash fiction, Dorne. I think you may just have found out that writing flash fiction is not only fun, but is part of your creativity makeup. I think it would make for a great story and wish that I had come up with it 🙂

Well done, and I’m so pleased you took up the challenge and came away with a brilliant piece of flash fiction.

  2. Oh Hugh, what I had that tree do to those guys in the longer version was along the lines of your damn cat sandwich LOL. I probably need to give the details sometime… along with a warning.
Thanks for your words of encouragement and it will probably lead to a plethora of my flash fiction now.
It’s a big thank you for asking me to do the challenge. I loved it! x

    1. We send acts, because we’re good at losing and looking like plonkers! You mentioned Gary Barlow. He would be good. In fact him and Take That. Although, we’d still come last -ish! We are not popular in Europe and folk are not scared of us!
I’ll get down off my orange box now. x

  3. You’re welcome, and I’m so pleased you participated. You’ve posed a great question in your challenge as well, although I probably would have been asking why do the UK send !! acts to the Eurovision Song Contest! You can probably tell that along with Steve from “Talk About Pop Music”, I’m a little upset about Saturday night. But hey, I’ll soon be myself again (what ever that is!)

  4. Thank you very much. I must say that the positive response has given me that much needed kick up the arse to post more of my fiction on here…. you have all been warned! x
